Mt. 8:23-27 “Why are you afraid, men of little faith?”
The scene described in today’s Gospel, marked by a terrible storm at sea, can only be seen as a natural phenomenon in which God intervenes with his power, but the end of the narrative is more of an appeal to our faith. It is a call to grow in a faith that is based on the certainty that God is with us even if at times it seems that He is asleep. He is there and his power sustains the world and governs the forces of nature. He is not there to free us from difficulties, but to give us strength and wisdom to face them, to instill confidence and security in us when we are gripped by fear and feel powerless. We see it every day when we hear news of great tragedies that fill us with horror but also show us the resilience of those who lose everything and give thanks for the life they have left and allows them to start again.
