Mt. 5:17-19   “I have not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it.”

In the Jewish world of Jesus’ time, the law with its innumerable norms and interpretations had become untouchable and was the basis of true justice; Jesus, without ignoring the fundamental value of the law and the prophets, comes to show us with his word, and above all with his life, what is the true essence of the law that they received from Moses at Sinai; that law that Jesus at some point summarized in two commandments reduced to one: you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul; and you shall love your neighbor as yourself. At the end of his life Jesus will say to us: love one another as I have loved you. This is how He comes to give full compliance to the law, to that basic decalogue that only intended to educate us in love until the fullness of time arrived and God sent his Son to free us from the law, teaching us to live as children. (Cf. Gal.4)
