“I pray for them…, for these whom you gave me, because they are yours.” Jn. 17:1-11b

Jesus’ words to his friends in private, on that night of his farewell, are not only for them. These are words told by John, about all of us who over the centuries have set out to follow the Lord, who prays to the Father, not for himself, who is about to give his life, but for his friends. It is moving to contemplate Jesus speaking to the Father and telling him that we are his property, the inheritance received from him, that we are already part of the family we dreamed of since He gave us life. What does Jesus ask for his own? Eternal life, knowledge of the Father, decision to enter into the knowledge of our Master. Today let us ask the Holy Spirit to awaken in us that passion for the inner knowledge of Jesus in order to love and serve Him more.
