“Whoever wants to be great among you, let him be your servant.” Mt. 20:17-28
Today Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem, to complete his mission, while his disciples think of positions, honors and privileges. The request of the mother of Zebedee’s children reveals a very human temptation: to confuse mission with power. In the logic of the Gospel, authority is not imposed; it is earned by serving. The follower of the Christian “way” serves out of love, closeness and coherence of life. This is the pedagogy of Jesus: a pedagogy of humility, service and self-giving. Do we want to be great for power or for service? Let us ask the Lord for the grace to be Christians with the heart of servants, capable of giving their lives every day.
