We continue to walk with Jesus, listening to his proposal. This young man, “who had so many possessions”, had allowed himself to be inspired by Jesus, the Wise Master. This wisdom of God proposes detachment to him because being attached to something or someone is a hindrance to happiness. The very fear of losing what we desire robs us of the joy of living. Jesus proposes an “if you will”, the beginning of this young man’s freedom and happiness. Mark presents us with the sadness that accompanies his inability to renounce it all. It is good to ask ourselves if we are happy, why yes, or why not, and evaluate attachments. Almost all of our worries and tensions come from those attachments to unattainable goals, to what becomes “our struggle” every day.
