THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS LIKE A MUSTARD SEED. Matthew 13:31-35
Jesus, in the first parable, tells us about a mustard seed, the smallest seed; but then, when it grows, it becomes the largest of garden plants and becomes tree.
Today let us raise a hymn to the simple, to the humble, to the small, to the uncounted, to the mustard seed, to Jesus’ predilection for children and for the elderly with a child’s heart. To Jeanne de Lestonnac who gave birth to a grandiose work, but, logically, small and simple in its beginnings.
Jesus, in the second parable, presents us with a woman who places a little leaven in a large dough of flour. And, without further ado, just by stirring the flour slightly, all the dough is fermented. The Kingdom requires our openness and free surrender because it is gratuitous Love, it is the Gift of God that is our good. Allowing the Kingdom to grow means nourishing this Love by listening to the Word and putting it into practice in a coherent and committed life, it also grows with a prayerful and sacramental life.
