I WANT MERCY AND NOT SACRIFICES. Matthew 12:1-8

This passage tells how Jesus and his disciples, passing through a wheat field on the Sabbath, gather ears of grain to eat. The Pharisees accuse them of violating the Sabbath, but Jesus reminds them that the purpose of the law is to serve humankind and not the other way around.

The laws that human beings create cannot be more important than the men and women themselves by and for whom they have been made. Do we allow the laws, economic, social, religious, to enslave human beings and attack, as always, the most vulnerable? It is true that many of these prescriptions do not depend directly on us, but… not to denounce these injustices, as Jesus did continuously throughout his life, is a grave sin of omission.

Let us always remember that, as Jesus taught, mercy is the heart of the law. Jesus tried to make mercy prevail over the blind observance of norms and laws that had nothing to do with the objective of the Law, which is the practice of love.
