THE NEW WINE IS POURED INTO NEW WINESKINS. Matthew 9:14-17

The message of this Gospel passage can be summed up in the phrase of Saint Paul: “He who is in Christ is a new creation; the old is past, everything is new.” The one who has encountered Christ, the one who has allowed himself to be animated by the love of Jesus and has become his follower, “I will follow you wherever you go”, is a new creature, now he lives, thinks, acts, reacts… in a Christ-like manner.

By being a friend of Christ, a friend of the bridegroom, what will prevail in him will be joy, the joy of living, and many of the old behaviors will cease to have importance in his life. In the same vein, Christ is a real newness, it is the new cloth with a different texture and fabric from that of the old cloth, with which it cannot be joined. With Christ the new heaven and the new earth begin. We have the same idea in the wineskins. New wine, the person of Christ, cannot be poured into old wineskins. Everything about Jesus cannot be understood and lived with an ancient mentality.
