Today’s text invites us to meet Jesus at a time when he himself solemnly declares: “I am the light of the world; he who follows me does not walk in darkness”. How much we need to encounter that light and welcome it, at this time when the panorama of the world is darkening more and more and we are unable to see a horizon for the future. Jesus tells us in a forceful way: “He who follows me does not walk in darkness.” But the reaction of the Pharisees, clinging as always to the law, totally closes the possibility of welcoming that light and with it, the clearest revelation about Jesus as the Son of God and as the Father’s Messenger and Savior of the World. John had already told us in the prologue to his Gospel: “He came to his own and his own did not receive him”. Is this not the situation we are experiencing today? How do I live it?
