“The new wine must be poured into new skins.” (Luke 5:33-39)
In the face of the criticisms of the Pharisees and scribes regarding the fasting practices that his disciples do not observe, Jesus tries to make them understand that something new is being born, but they do not detect it. Their hearts dulled with pride and arrogance, with attachments to the tradition of their ancestors, prevents them from accepting a new way of relating to God. It is the call to worship God, not with oppressive human norms and laws, but from the commandment of love. This means establishing a relationship of Father to sons and daughters and of these to their brothers and sisters in order to return to the Father, in permanent union with his Son Jesus. The newness of Jesus demands a change of attitudes and motivations; in other words, a conversion, leaving behind the old self, to let the Spirit make us new creatures.
