“This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but no other will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. (Lk. 11:29-32)
In the passage of Luke 11:29-32, we are presented with a profound reflection on the search for signs and the true conversion of heart. We live in a world that is constantly looking for tangible signs and proof of everything. True faith, however, is not based on outward signs, but on a personal relationship with God.
The generation Jesus is referring to was looking for a miraculous sign that would validate his message. However, Jesus reminds them of the sign of Jonah. Jonah, a prophet who was swallowed by a large fish and then released, became a sign to the people of Nineveh, who repented and changed their ways. Similarly, Jesus, through his death and resurrection, becomes the definitive sign for all of us.
In our daily lives, how many times do we look for outward signs to validate our beliefs or decisions! We forget that EVERYTHING SPEAKS TO US OF GOD, of his love of predilection for each one of us, He is sending us signs, He always reminds us of his love, He always invites us, He seeks us, He calls us…
It is enough for us to go into our heart, and we will find Him, then there will be no need for signs or signals. No matter how many signs there are, if there is no encounter, it is useless. The Pope may come to speak to me personally, but if my heart is closed, there will be no encounter.
