“The second is equivalent.” (Mt. 22:34-40)

The text we have for today is central: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. And you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” It was Jesus’ answer to the doctor of the law, who maliciously asked him what was the most important precept of the law. Jesus had to choose from more than 240 precepts and more than 360 prohibitions. As I prepare this script for prayer, we are as Church and as humanity, gathering in an Easter atmosphere the legacy of our beloved Pope Francis. And it can be said that he understood and lived tirelessly, that originality of Jesus to unite to the love of God, the love of neighbor. We are remembering, and we are receiving examples of what he did to show everyone, and especially those most in need of love, that he cared about them, that he loved them, that they had the right to be happy because that is what God wants. Let us ask ourselves today: apart from admiration and sympathy, how have I accepted this call that God made to us all, through what we saw Francis experience?
