“The greatest among you, let him become the servant of others.”. Matthew 23:1-12

Today we have a hard text to pray about. “Specialists discuss whether Jesus denounced the lawyers and Pharisees, in public, in too strong and even violent way… But we must accept that the fundamental part of this Gospel account has its origin in the historical Jesus.” (José María Castillo)  In any case, Jesus did strongly question the conduct of the Pharisees, who preached to the people what they did not live and that what they were most interested in was having a good public image. They did not live for God or for the people, but for themselves. But this is not a thing of the past. We have not yet digested that in the spiritual order there is no superior or inferior, or rather, the greatest is the one who serves. Jesus taught us this by his example and Pope Francis reminded us of it with his life. Let us ask for the grace to enter through that evangelical logic. As an Argentine cardinal said: “Now it is up to all of us to follow the example of Francis.” Let us ask this for ourselves and especially for the new Pastor of the Church.
