Teach me your way of loving. Mt. 19:16-22

This passage of the rich young ruler is well known to us. Surely we have prayed with him many times. The young man is very sure that he had complied with the law and surely it was true; but that had not given him the fullness he sought. A hint to us when we find ourselves dissatisfied despite our efforts to be good… The rich young ruler finds the price he has to pay to be profoundly happy excessive. He hopes that Jesus will suggest other “good works,” something he could do from his wealth without disturbing his life. “But we don’t give God anything until we give Him everything.” Following Jesus does not consist in knowing him and doing what He did, but in making our own “his way”, his spirit. In our prayer today, let us repeat like a mantra: “Jesus teach me ‘your way’ of making the other feel more human; Let your steps be my steps, make your way of proceeding my own. Show me “your way”… of loving.
