Simply brothers and sisters Mt. 17:22-27

In these times, when we so often hear news concerning corruption in those who administer the assets of the State, this Gospel has a surprising relevance. Jesus, who has just made the second announcement of his passion, is confronted with the issue of paying taxes. And what is clear is that Jesus was not exempt from taxes – Peter affirms – nor did He want to be. Jesus wanted for Himself and for His followers to be normal citizens, without any kind of social or economic privileges. That is clear in this story, in which it seems that Jesus takes the matter as a story that should not be given much importance, the whole thing is not to set a bad example. That’s why He sends Pedro to take the coin out of the fish… And us? Surely we have taken steps in that of simply being brothers and sisters. But it is possible that we need to review fundamental attitudes, in the light of what Jesus teaches us today.
