Once again, this account of Luke’s Gospel invites us to reflect, to discover something wonderful that we did not expect. The two disciples were going towards Emmaus full of disappointment, thinking about what they had experienced with Jesus, but disappointed because in the end everything was a failure; They never tired of commenting on what had happened, but with an air of sadness as of someone who has lost all hope. At the end of the story, we see them return to Jerusalem, retracing their steps, now full of joy. What happened? Jesus has made himself present to them, they have felt their hearts burn when they listened to his Word; they have recognized him when they broke bread, and then everything changed. It is a reflection of what we live so many times: the longing for what could have been darkens our horizon, but the encounter with Jesus and his Word ignites our hearts and illuminates our lives.
