“He who does the will of my Father.” Mt. 12:46-50
Today’s Gospel recounts an encounter that may seem at first glance painful for our maternal sensitivity.
Jesus is speaking to the people when Mary appears with his brothers because they wanted to talk to him. Someone warns Jesus and He responds that everyone who does the Father’s will is His mother and His brothers.
It seems that He ignores the desire of his family; however, in that expression He is acknowledging that it is precisely his mother, Mary, who has perfectly fulfilled the will of the Father.
It is very easy to say that we are brothers and sisters of one another, but as long as we do not respond to God’s infinite love in concrete acts of justice, goodness and compassion, we will not be participating in that family that seeks to establish the Kingdom. Let’s ask God what His will is in our lives.
